ASAMA, a division of the United States Sports Academy, is dedicated to the preservation of sports history, art and literature. ASAMA’s collection consists of more than 1,200 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, prints, posters, photographs and assemblages. It is believed to be the largest collection of sport art in North America, perhaps the world.
Housed in the architecturally acclaimed building on the Academy’s main campus, ASAMA features exhibits of world-renowned sports artists such as Hans Erni, Charles Billich and Ernie Barnes. Last year, ASAMA awarded Alabama's own sport artist Daniel Moore with the National Sport Artist of the Year.
ASAMA’s most prominent work of art is the large mural on the front of the building. “A Tribute to the Human Spirit,” was created by the renowned Spanish artist, Cristobal Gabarron. The tribute stands as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the race barrier in professional baseball. The mural, approximately 27 feet high and 12 feet wide, is valued at $2 million and believed to be the largest outdoor work of art in Alabama.
