If unbelievable nature is your calling, then Bankhead National Forest quietly awaits you with an abundance of bluffs, canyons, waterfalls, and lakes.  Four recreation areas are located throughout the forest, offering a wide range of activities including hiking, primitive camping, swimming and horseback riding trails.  Every town has its hero, ours is Olympic track star, Jesse Owens who captured four gold medals in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.  Walk in his shoes at the Jesse Owens Memorial Park.  Journey back in time to the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center where artifacts dating as far back as 10,000 B.C. are on display.  The newly anticipated North Alabama Birding Trail is now open with stops in Lawrence County.  Just a short drive away is Doublehead Resort.  Spend that quality time with the family in its waterfront cottages.  Horseback riding, watercraft rentals, nature trail, guided quail hunts are just a few things to enjoy at the resort.  Or bring the family for some good food and fun at one of our festivals.  The Alabama Chicken & Egg Festival and Indian Multicultural Educational Event are two festivals unique to the area and fun for all ages.
